AU NATURALE

Traditionally, at Johnson and Wales, graphic design students take a class called “Design Solutions Team” for two terms. It is a class where students learn to work with real clients. I was enrolled in Design Solutions Team II during the spring of 2020. This means the in-person classes were cut short and the course became virtual. Usually, we collaborate with the culinary students and create menus for their “culinary pop-up.” We adjusted the project to make it so they did not have to use physical menus, but rather a menu that could be pulled up on the guest’s phone. The culinary students that my partner and I were assigned called their pop-up “au naturale.” The theme was high-end ingredients that represented nature and natural elements. We used shades of green, whispy elements, and simple leaf graphics.

Transitioning to online classes was tough for everyone. This class became difficult in the sense that we could not actually meet with our clients, however, it does demonstrate how real-world freelance works. The culinary students were not the best at getting back to us in a very timely manner, which lead to us being at a standstill for a while. The process of picking a logo took them the longest. They sent my partner and me a color palette and some inspiration. My partner and I each made a few logos then collected two of hers and two of mine to present to the culinary students. They chose one of my logos, and we continued to make edits. We adjusted the colors, the fonts, stroke widths, and the placement of the leaves. The font was a detail that the culinary students were focusing on, so I gave them tons of options. Finally, we narrowed it down to two different fonts and two layouts of the leaves. Once the final logo was chosen, we were able to move forward with the menu itself.
