CENTURY GOTHIC
TYPEBOOK
For this project, I had to pick a font and collect information to create a type specimen book. I came across Century Gothic and liked it a lot. The book had to have a total of at least five paragraphs, the full alphabet, numbers, and symbols in the chosen font, at least five text anatomy diagrams, the history of the font, a biography on the creator, and at least two design-related quotes. Century Gothic is a very geometric font, so I wanted to highlight this fact. I started with a warmer color palette which contrasts my usual blues and purples that I gravitate towards. I ended with a cohesive and visually pleasing sixteen-page type specimen book all about Century Gothic. The finished product was quite different than what I had done in the past but transitioned me into a new style focused on geometry with a love of typography.

When first starting any project, I almost always start with some sort of green, blue, or purple for the color palette. This time, I simply Googled “color palettes.” I came across this one with a tan as well as red, navy, yellow, and a bright blue. I felt like it was simply just pleasing to the eye so I took the colors and adjusted them slightly with the color sliders to make them my own. I had fun using a new color palette and experimenting. I feel like this was the first time I stepped out of my comfort zone, and this project ended up being one of my favorite projects, even years later.
Even with how much I loved this project, it certainly needed more edits. I have come a long way as a designer since I created this type specimen book. However, my style is still often focused on geometric shapes. This fact made it easier to make edits to this project because it is still in line with my current style. The cover of the book as well as some of the pages with just patterns on them were simply ugly in my opinion. For example, the page seen to the right in this mockup was a grid pattern with the triangles within the squares. I was playing around to come up with a new cover page, and this one was a close second choice, so I decided to still use it. Making small edits and updates has just grown my love for this project.
