SPELLY YOUTUBE CHANNEL

Due to me being a double major, I have had the opportunity to meet many people with a wide variety of passions. Many of my friends from each major know about my other major as well. A friend from my media communications class, Henry, had approached me about starting a YouTube channel. He is very passionate about motivating people to be their best possible selves and he also loves working out and staying healthy. He wanted to share his passions through a YouTube channel and needed help with the branding. He requested a logo, a channel banner, a motion graphic intro, and a thumbnail for his first video. We had also discussed me continuing to do the thumbnails for him as he posted more videos. He is nick-named “Spelly” so he decided it was a good name for his channel. This was my first experience with freelance work, and it was definitely a great first experience.

After sketching with pencil and paper and making a mood board for myself including some inspiration that Henry sent me, I began sketching digitally. I wanted a strong and powerful feel, so I used bold typefaces and solid strokes. I used the blues and oranges that he sent me for his preferred color palette.

I collected my favorite six logos that I had created and presented them in a numbered grid for Henry to view. I personally really liked the splatter logos, and they took a lot of time.  However, he did not even mention these logos at all. He liked number three, however, sent me a new color palette to try and work with.

With the new color palette, I adjusted the color of some of the logos that Henry liked from the last six I gave him. I also began playing around with a flexed muscle, and he loved it instantly and said that it was the feel he was looked for. He chose the last logo on the top row but soon after asked if I could include a rowing oar. I tried a few different versions, but the only one that worked was replacing the line under the muscle with the oar. Gradients are often hard to work with and look cheesy, but due to the neon green and blue being very similar, I feel the gradient works.

This is the finalized logo.

Using the logo, the main request Henry had was a motion graphic for the intro of his videos.

the logo is in the center in an outlined, almost industrial form to resemble mental framing.

Slowly, some cracks with a lava texture forms behind the logo as a neon blue fills out the logo.

There is ambient noise that sounds like it is from a cave while a cracking noise lines up with the cracks of lava. We are both very pleased with the outcome.
